What are forklift forks?

1. Type of pallet or load

2. Forklift capacity

The fork must be able to withstand at least the maximum weight the forklift can lift. This is mainly determined by the section of the fork (width and thickness) and by the load center, which is usually located at 600 mm in operations with standard pallets.

3. Height and type of fork carriage

4. Fork length

The standard length is 1200 mm, suitable for most European pallets. However, it may be necessary to use longer forks in double-deep operations or for special loads.

An increasingly used option is telescopic forks, which allow manual adjustment of their extension between 1200 and 1800 mm. They are ideal when greater versatility is required or in logistics spaces where different pallet sizes are combined.

5. Additional technical requirements

In some work environments, forks need specific features:

  • Non-slip coating: for working in cold stores or areas with the presence of oils.

  • Integrated scale: useful for weighing the load instantly and reducing handling.

  • Cushion pads: protect delicate products such as glass, appliances, or light packaging.

  • Integrated cameras: provide greater visual control in precision operations or at high altitudes.

  • Anti-corrosion treatment: recommended in humid, maritime, or chemical exposure environments.

When to inspect or replace forks?

Progressive wear of forks is inevitable with daily use. Cracks, deformations, loss of thickness, or visible bending are warning signs. It is recommended to:

  • Visually inspect them regularly.

  • Check the alignment and condition of the fixing hook.

  • Measure thickness and replace them if they have lost more than 10% compared to their original state.

Periodic maintenance is essential to extend their lifespan and ensure the safety of the operator and the goods.
