What is a lift table, and in what situations is it the best solution?
18 - 06 - 2026
In many warehouses and production centers, there is a recurring problem that is not always solved with a forklift: the need to work at different heights comfortably, safely and repeatedly. Manually raising and lowering pallets, adapting the working height to different operators or moving goods between different levels are situations where the lift table offers a specific, efficient and often more cost-effective solution than other alternatives.
In this article, we explain what a lift table is, how it works, what types exist and in which situations it is the most suitable tool.
What is a lift table?
A lift table is a material handling device that allows loads or people to be raised and lowered between different heights using a hydraulic or pneumatic scissor system. Unlike a forklift, the lift table does not move horizontally: its function is exclusively vertical, raising or lowering a work platform with the load or operator on it.
They are fixed or semi-fixed pieces of equipment, designed to be installed at a specific point in the facility where the height difference between two working levels is a limiting factor for productivity or safety.
How does a lift table work?
The most common system is the hydraulic scissor mechanism: a set of X-shaped articulated arms that expand or contract driven by one or more hydraulic cylinders. Operation can be electric, pneumatic or manual, and control is carried out using push-button controls or pedals depending on the model.
The load capacity, maximum lifting height and platform dimensions vary depending on the model, from compact tables for 500 kg loads to industrial platforms for several thousand kilograms and heights of several meters.
Types of lift tables
Fixed lift table
It is permanently installed on the floor, usually recessed into a pit so that the platform is level with the floor in the lowered position. It is the most robust solution and offers the highest load capacity. It is widely used in loading docks, production lines and transfer areas between levels.
Mobile lift table
It has wheels that allow it to be moved within the facility. It requires no installation work and offers greater flexibility. It is the most suitable option when the table is needed at different points in the warehouse or when a fixed installation is not possible.
Double scissor lift table
It combines two scissor systems in series to reach greater lifting heights with a more compact platform size. It is suitable for work at high elevations or when the available floor space is limited.
Lift table with rotating or tilting platform
It incorporates additional functions such as platform rotation or tilting, which are very useful in assembly lines, ergonomics in industrial workstations or processes that require access to the load from different angles.
Situations where the lift table is the best solution
Truck loading and unloading dock
When the dock height does not exactly match the truck bed, goods transfer becomes more difficult and creates ergonomic and safety risks. A dock lift table allows the height difference to be adjusted quickly and safely, making work with pallet trucks easier and reducing loading and unloading time.
Transfer between levels without a forklift
In facilities with mezzanines, raised floors or elevated areas where it is not possible or does not make sense to use a forklift, the lift table is the most efficient solution for moving goods vertically on a repeated basis.
Ergonomics in workstations
Always working at the same height, regardless of the operator’s size or the type of task, reduces fatigue and the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. Height-adjustable lift tables allow the workstation to be adapted to each person and each task, improving both safety and productivity.
Feeding production lines
In manufacturing processes where components must continuously arrive at a specific height, the lift table acts as an automatic feeder, always keeping the load at the optimal working height without the need for operator intervention.
Picking and order preparation areas
In warehouses with multi-level shelving, a lift table in the order preparation area allows the operator to always work at the correct height, reducing unnecessary movements and improving workstation ergonomics.
Advantages of the lift table compared with other solutions
- Safety: specifically designed for work at height, with perimeter protections, safety valves and locking systems that guarantee load stability in any position.
- Precision: they allow the load to be positioned exactly at the required height, something that is not possible with a standard forklift.
- Cost: they are generally more cost-effective than other lifting solutions for fixed and repetitive applications.
- Low maintenance: the hydraulic scissor system is robust and requires little maintenance under normal conditions of use.
- No need for a specialized operator: unlike a forklift, they do not require a license or specific training for basic operation.
